7 Miles of I-84 Closed to Bikes
It’s road-work season, and a 7-mile stretch of I-84 between Hilgard State Park and La Grande in Northeast Oregon is temporarily closed to cyclists traveling both directions. During construction, the road’s shoulder will only allow 1 foot of space between the busy freeway and a concrete barrier. With 5,000 trucks passing through the work zone each day, riding this stretch would be extremely unsafe for cyclists. The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed the work zone to bikes and set up signage indicating a bike detour from Exit 216 in Pendleton along Highway 331, Highway 11, Highway 204 and Highway 82. The route rejoins I-84 at Exit 261 in La Grande. Monday through Friday, riders will also have the option of taking a free shuttle bus from the Arrowhead Truck Stop near Exit 216 heading east, or the La Grande Transit Center near Exit 261 heading west. Cyclists are asked to call 541-429-7519 to confirm bicycle storage space.
