Cairo to Rome
August 14 - 18, 2017
In Oregon, a bicycle is legally considered a vehicle, and the same Oregon road laws apply. Please “be seen” and practice safe riding. Vehicle traffic, farm equipment and narrow shoulders exist on many Oregon roads, and you may find that construction projects, traffic or other events may cause road conditions or signage to differ from the map results, ride descriptions and directions. For travel options plus weather and road conditions, visit tripcheck.com, call 511 (in Oregon only), 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941. Routes listed on this website are for informational purposes and intended as a reference guide only.

No passport needed for US residents! This route is not only for the aspiring world traveler but is designed for the geology and astronomy buffs as well. Bring your gravel bike or let us supply one, we recommend at least a 35mm wide tire and bigger is better for most of this route. We will shuttle from Portland or just meet up in Ontario, OR for a shorter shuttle to Cairo and the beginning of our three day, 136 mile ride. We start out on pavement to get warmed up and acquainted, but hit the gravel soon enough. We timed this tour to coincide with the Perseid meteor shower, and our first campsite should have basically no light pollution. Our staff naturalist will be on hand for any questions you have about what you have seen so far. You enjoy relaxing in camp while our staff prepares your meal and beverages.
The ride continues through the Succor Creek canyon on our second day on the way to Jordan Valley for night two. Check out the displays of Basque history while we set up camp and dinner, then for we will support the local economy with breakfast at a local café.
More mixed dirt and pavement for our last day. For the history buffs we have a stop of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau’s grave on our way to our final destination, the Pillars of Rome! Accommodations in Rome before the drive back to Ontario and Portland.
The package includes:
- Two shuttle days
- 3 days riding (you bike or ours)
- 3 breakfasts/3 lunches/4 dinners
*We supply bikes but if you wish to ride your own, you will need a minimum 32MM tire for the gravel portions.
