    Eastern Oregon

This 134-mile ride encompasses sections of the original Oregon Trail and takes riders near historic small-town communities in northeastern Oregon. Ride under a scented canopy of Ponderosa pine forests, past stunning views of the Blue Mountains and the Wallowa Mountains and across dramatic, sagebrush-covered rangelands near La Grande and Baker City.

The Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway is a great trip for riders of all skill levels as its roads are wide and have limited traffic. This Bikeway’s proximity to all types of services and amenities means riders can fashion a challenging non-stop ride or break the trip into leisurely segments.

Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway in Three Days

Riding the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway in three days instead of one lets you experience the whole route, but at a more relaxed pace. You’ll have more time for stops along the way, and can break up the ride as much as you want to. To create the most even-legged split, you’ll start in Union instead of La Grande. From there you’ll ride the route’s top “loop” through La Grande on day one, and then ride from Union to Baker City and back on days two and three. You can alter this split by riding the Union-La Grande-Union loop on day three instead of day one, or by riding the route in a clockwise direction.

Union-based three-day split

Day one: Ride from Union to La Grande via the Union-Cove segment of the Bikeway, and return to Union along the La Grande-Baker Highway (48 miles). Stay the night in Union.

Day two: Ride from Union to Baker City, following the Bikeway route through North Powder and Haines (42.6 miles). Spend the night in Baker City.

Day three: Ride from Baker City to Union, following the Medical Springs Highway (43.9 miles).

Accommodations and stops along the way

There are plenty of places to stay in both Union and Baker City, and you can break up the ride further with rest stops in towns along the way. To get started, check out this helpful list of bike-friendly businesses from the Visit Eastern Oregon blog.
