Chewaucan Crossing Trailhead

Stay Safe

In Oregon, a bicycle is legally considered a vehicle, and the same Oregon road laws apply. Please “be seen” and practice safe riding. Vehicle traffic, farm equipment and narrow shoulders exist on many Oregon roads, and you may find that construction projects, traffic or other events may cause road conditions or signage to differ from the map results, ride descriptions and directions. For travel options plus weather and road conditions, visit, call 511 (in Oregon only), 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941. Routes listed on this website are for informational purposes and intended as a reference guide only.

The Chewaucan Crossing Trailhead accesses the Fremont National Recreation Trail (middle segment) along the Chewaucan River with fishing access.

The Fremont National Recreation Trail, which traverses the entire Fremont National Forest from north to south, is still under construction. Currently users can travel north from Chewaucan Crossing Trailhead, 16 miles to Government Harvey Pass or south 33 miles to Cox Pass. Several road access points for shuttle vehicle parking are available on both the northern and the southern routes for users who do not wish to travel the entire distance. (See Forest visitors map available at all Fremont NF offices)

Accommodations include five campsites with tables and fire grates, an accessible outhouse, parking for large groups and trailers, and a pedestrian bridge over the river. Activities include river fishing for Rainbow and Brook trout and bird watching.
