Hard Times Distillery
In Oregon, a bicycle is legally considered a vehicle, and the same Oregon road laws apply. Please “be seen” and practice safe riding. Vehicle traffic, farm equipment and narrow shoulders exist on many Oregon roads, and you may find that construction projects, traffic or other events may cause road conditions or signage to differ from the map results, ride descriptions and directions. For travel options plus weather and road conditions, visit tripcheck.com, call 511 (in Oregon only), 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941. Situated in the Willamette Valley on the Long Tom River, Hard Times Distillery inhabits an old granary in downtown Monroe, Oregon (pop 680), halfway between Eugene and Corvallis.
The building sat empty for about nine years before we finally found it, after a long search through Springfield, Eugene, Junction City and Harrisburg. Monroe embraced us, and we’ve been happily cooking in the ugliest building in town ever since. What you will notice on a tour at Hard Times is that there are not a lot of slick, machine-made surfaces. Dudley and James built everything themselves. The production stills were built by hand, and the fermentation process was developed over time through a lightbulb-like quest for a vodka that made us smile.
We currently have two pot stills and four vodka columns. Our fermentation process handles about 1200 gallons at a turn.
