Like its companion route, La Grande to Baker City the Back Way, this ride is a great way to get off the beaten path as you ride between two of the main cities in Eastern Oregon. This route is the hillier of the two.

Starting in downtown Baker City, head north out past the airport and catch the Medical Springs Highway, which rolls up and down, crossing the Powder River, going through the “towns” of Pondosa and Medical Springs, and then climbs up quite a bit before descending along scenic Catherine Creek (there’s a nice state park for a stop). The road takes you into Union; from there take Highway 237 straight north for a roundabout jog into Cove, which has a beautiful little church. Then cross the Grande Ronde three times as you head into La Grande.

Combine these two routes for a nice two-day tour.
