This is a short urban ride that offers the best of Portland riding – stout climbs, leafy winding roads, majestic views and the exhilaration of mingling with traffic!

The map shows the route starting at the south end of the Broadway Bridge, but you can start anywhere and head downtown. From the heart of downtown (Broadway), turn west and start climbing Vista to Council Crest, the highest point above downtown. From there, circle back down and connect to Hewitt Boulevard, a beautiful road snaking under a canopy of trees. Cross the Sunset Highway onto Skyline and then turn down Fairmount for a ripping downhill through ritzy West Hills neighborhoods and Washington Park, before descending back to the start through Northwest Portland. This is an excellent way to combine a serious workout and some fun riding into a short route.

A note: Some of this route – Broadway and Everett in particular – goes right through the urban jungle on congested streets. You should be adept and comfortable riding in traffic, and don’t rely on ALL Portland drivers to be courteous and aware.

Motorized Vehicle Traffic: Everything from light to heavy

Comments

  1. There are a lot of routes in the hills to the west of town. The variations to this and other routes is endless!

  2. The Portland Pedalworks bike shop is at 345 NW Everett st. if you need some air.
