You won’t find much flat road on this scenic, twisting ride, but you’ll find the stark beauty of craggy rock outcroppings, rolling vistas and bubbling streams. Starting in Fossil, climb 10 miles along Highway 19 before turning right on Row Creek Road, descend 12 miles to a crossing of the John Day River, then climb eight miles along Girds Creek Road before turning left on Highway 207, which is mostly downhill all the way to Service Creek.
You can ride this as a one-way with a shuttle at Service Creek; that ride is 46 miles and has 3,675 feet of gain. If you want to do the entire loop, you’ll face 10 miles of climb on the way back toward Fossil from Service Creek, followed by a long downhill glide back to the start. The longer loop has 5,400 feet of gain.
Motorized Vehicle Traffic: Light to Moderate

We did the loop from Shelton Wayside. Highly recommended. Lunch at Service Creek, but otherwise water is only available at Shelton and Pioneer Park.
