    This is a good example of how to get from one town on the freeway to another town on the freeway while completely avoiding the freeway. Enjoy canyons, small towns, wildlife areas and low traffic.

    Starting at the intersection of Highways 30 and 82 near Eastern Oregon University, follow Ladd Canyon Road past Ladd Marsh. Cross over the freeway and ride to Hot Lake, where the old resort is being refurbished; it’s a fascinating place. Then it’s on into Union, home of the funky Union Hotel and Gravy Dave’s cafe. From Union, stay on the main road – Highway 237 – through Pyles Canyon and on into North Powder. From North Powder, it’s a straight shot on Highway 30 through Haines and on to Baker City, with its splendid restored downtown full of interesting shops, good food and the opulent old Geiser Grand Hotel. (You can also jog west a bit at Haines and catch Pocahontas Road into Baker City if you’d like to avoid Highway 30.)

    This is part of a great two-day trip, taking the Baker City to La Grande the Back Way route as your return.
