Stay Safe

In Oregon, a bicycle is legally considered a vehicle, and the same Oregon road laws apply. Please “be seen” and practice safe riding. Vehicle traffic, farm equipment and narrow shoulders exist on many Oregon roads, and you may find that construction projects, traffic or other events may cause road conditions or signage to differ from the map results, ride descriptions and directions. For travel options plus weather and road conditions, visit, call 511 (in Oregon only), 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941. Head south out of The Dalles on US 197 for a little over half a mile. Turn left on Columbia View Drive, which becomes Fifteen Mile Road. Park at the old schoolhouse.

The east side of the Gorge offers a wonderfully unique view of this area, with rolling wheatfields, towering cottonwood trees and basalt mesas. Ride west to Eight Mile Road from the old schoolhouse. Turn left and ride past the first turn to Emerson Loop Road. On the second turnoff to Emerson Loop, take a left (this turn comes at about the 7.2-mile mark). Turn left again on Emerson Loop Road at 10.5 miles. Turn right at Kelly Cutoff at 14.5 miles, and turn again on Kelly Cutoff at 16.1 miles. At mile 17.1, stay left on Fifteen Mile Road and head back to your starting point at the old schoolhouse.

  1. If you’re driving from Portland, drive east on I-84 to The Dalles. Take Exit 87 and drive south on US 197 for a little over one half of a mile. Turn left onto Columbia View Drive. Follow this for 3.4 miles as it turns into Fifteen Mile Road. At 3.4 Miles, turn left onto what is still Fifteen Mile Road and park at the white old schoolhouse on the left, before crossing a bridge.

An excellent ride with abundant open vistas of rolling wheat fields and blue skies, all on average to better chip seal pavement. Excellent early morning ride in the hot days of summer. Very light traffic, but hay trucks can be numerous during harvest time. Be mindful of the wind forecast.
