Stay Safe

In Oregon, a bicycle is legally considered a vehicle, and the same Oregon road laws apply. Please “be seen” and practice safe riding. Vehicle traffic, farm equipment and narrow shoulders exist on many Oregon roads, and you may find that construction projects, traffic or other events may cause road conditions or signage to differ from the map results, ride descriptions and directions. For travel options plus weather and road conditions, visit tripcheck.com, call 511 (in Oregon only), 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941. This route offers a much more back-roads feel to getting from Portland to Astoria – and shows off the Banks-Vernonia rails-to-trails park. After you get out of the Portland area, the roads on this route generally have less traffic than Highway 30, but also offer less in the way of a shoulder.

This route starts from the train station in downtown Portland, snakes up over the West Hills – a healthy climb – and roughly parallels Highway 26 into the town of Banks. Here is where you can pick up the Banks-Vernonia Trail. From Vernonia, you’ll follow minor highways all the way to Astoria. There is some wild coastal rain forest along the way, and plenty of wildlife (consider a side trip near Jewell to view the famous elk herd). This section also features some very challenging climbs.

After the road flattens out, the cruise into Astoria along Youngs Bay is pleasant and open.

This is a challenging one-day route; there’s not much in the way of accommodation along the way, so consider starting from Banks if it’s too much to take on in one day.

Motorized Vehicle Traffic: Light to moderate

Seasons: All, unless winter conditions are unusually bad
