This ride can be a moderate flat out-and-back to Sauvie Island, or a challenging combination of flat and climbing if you do the loop as mapped here. Start at the Salmon Springs Fountain at Waterfront Park and ride north on Front Avenue to St. Helens Road/Highway 30. Continue to Sauvie Island, crossing the bridge and riding a counter-clockwise loop around the island. Once finished with that loop, ride south on St. Helens Road and turn right to make the long steep climb up Newberry Road. From Newberry turn left onto Skyline Drive, follow that along the ridge and later turn left on Thompson Road. Thompson will intersect with Cornell Road (turn left) for a downhill into Northwest Portland. Ride east down to the river and turn right at Waterfront Park to end back at the Salmon Springs Fountain.

Motorized Vehicle Traffic: Light (Sauvie Island, Newberry) to Heavy (Highway 30)

Seasons: All

Comments

  1. be sure you have the right gear for a really steep climb as you turn on to Newberry Rd it is really tough to shift in the middle of the first 1/4 mile up the hill.

  2. The ride out to the island from Portland is about an hour, depending on how fast your ride, although you ride along the busy St. Helens Road. The island has great wildlife and beautiful farms. See if you can find Krugers farm market. Fantastic produce.
