Spring Ride on the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway
The Union County Chamber of Commerce is offering a great opportunity to experience the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway this spring. On May 4 and 5, the chamber will host a supported ride on the 134-mile route, which was designated in April 2012 as part of Oregon’s Scenic Bikeway program.
The event will kick off at Mountain Works Bicycles in La Grande with check-in and snacks on Friday afternoon, May 3. On Saturday morning, riders will meet in Riverside Park for a send-off. From there the group will continue to Union, roll through Medical Springs and stop in Baker City for the night. On Sunday, riders will complete the second half of the bikeway by mid-afternoon, and will regroup at Riverside Park for snacks and celebration. One- and two-day registration options are available, so you can ride as much as you like.
Support vehicles will carry luggage and keep riders fueled up with water and snacks. For complete ride details, including fees, registration information and lodging suggestions, visit the event page.
That’s the nitty gritty — but why ride the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway?
The incredible scenery tops our list. The Wallowa and Elkhorn Mountains serve as the backdrop to this ride, and the wide-open, low-traffic Eastern Oregon country roads roll through a range of environments, from forest to sagebrush to farmland. You’ll connect with new friends in the several tiny Oregon towns that dot the route, and riding with a group provides camaraderie and inspiration to push through those rollers. By participating in the spring ride, you’ll offer your support to small Oregon towns and contribute to maintaining and enhancing the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway.
Plus, the fresh country air is good for you. Trust us.
