Newberry Crater Rim – Loop
Trailhead Elevation: 6342 ft
Trailhead: From Bend, drive 23 miles south on Highway 97 and turn left (east) on FS 21. Follow this paved road 15 miles up the slopes of Newberry Crater to Paulina Lake Campground. After parking in the day use area, cross Road 21 and begin climbing up Road 500 toward Paulina Peak. (1 hour from Bend.)
Highlights: Circling the rim of this huge volcano! The caldera is over 1,000’ deep in most places and contains two large, trout-filled lakes. Along the way you will have stunning views of Paulina and East Lakes, the high desert looking south and east and the Cascade mountains to the west. The loop is best done in counter-clockwise direction. Look for the trail on your right about 2.8 miles up the Paulina Peak road, or head another 500 vertical feet to the top for the view and then back down to the trail.
Seasons: Summer and fall

This is a great ride. Went past the trail and ended at the top at the viewpoint at the start, then came back down to find the trail! GPS track can be found here:

The views are excellent and the terrain demanding in some places. The controlled slide over the last 4 miles through loose pumice down to the lake ends a great day….
