Pioneer Bridle Trail

  • Length:
    8 miles
  • Difficulty:
    Challenging
  • Region:
    Mt. Hood / The Gorge
  • Nearby Cities:
Rhododendron, Government Camp, Welches, Zig Zag

The eight-mile, intermediate-level Pioneer Bridle Trail parallels Highway 26 and connects Rhododendron with Government Camp. The single-track twists through dense forests and includes some technical rocky sections. Riders can continue riding to climb to Timberline Lodge via the Enid Lake, Cross Town and Glade Trails.

Trailhead: Follow Highway 26 east through the city of Sandy toward Mt. Hood. Pass through Welches, Zigzag and Rhododendron to the Tollgate Campground (about 1⁄2 mile east of Rhododendron) on the south side of Highway 26.

Seasons: Spring – Fall (snow-dependent)

Note: Be careful crossing Highway 26 approximately 4.6 miles from the start point. To create a 22-mile loop ride, return to the beginning via Still Creek Road (Forest Road 2612), located just south of the Still Creek Campground.
